Outdoor Ed. Class - Kayak Paddles
Project Leader: Sue Buzzell
"We believe that it is important for youth to experience outdoor recreational activities. Many of our students have never had the opportunity to hike, ski, snowshoe or kayak. This class exposes them to these activities and hopefully encourages them to continue to participate in them throughout their lives. We want our youth to be able to enjoy all that this area has to offer. It is also healthy for them to participate in physical activity during the school day."
"This Outdoor Education class is taken by 6,7 and 8th graders at Stearns Jr/Sr High school in Millinocket, Maine. We also run trips after school for all junior high students. The program runs throughout the school year with activities varying based on the season. We have been running this class for the past ten years and feel that it instills an appreciation for the outdoors in our students and teaches them how to be good stewards of our environment."
"The goal of this class is to foster a stronger relationship between students and nature. Many students who have lived here all their lives have not had the opportunity to get out and enjoy what our region has to offer. We are so lucky to be able to ski, snowshoe, kayak and hike right outside the backdoor of our school. This class instills an appreciation for outdoor recreation and encourages it as a lifelong activity."
