Our Katahdin published Charles Lawton: Approach taken by Our Katahdin may show the way to prosperity in News 2018-01-28 13:46:29 -0500
By CHARLES LAWTON - For at least a generation, economic development in the great North Woods of Maine had to be one of two things – either revitalization of forestry and logging and the industrial mill jobs they supported, or creation of parks and tourist attractions that would provide the economic base of the future. It couldn’t be both, proponents of each side argued.
Parks and tourists, industrial supporters argued, would bring government and regulations that would stifle the logging industry and bar hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and other traditionally easy access to and use of large tracts of forest land not owned by but available to local residents...

Our Katahdin responded to Movies in the Park -- *** IN PROCESS!! *** with submitted 2016-06-27 18:18:47 -0400
For the summer months, a blow up Movie projection system could be purchased for the park at the end of Main Street in Millinocket. Movies could be free (or of minimal cost) and people could bring their own blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. I think the downward slope of the park would make it a perfect viewing area. The last time we drove through Medway, East Millinocket and Millinocket, we noticed a lot of food trucks. Movies in the park could be a way to generate business for the food trucks and downtown area restaurants.Official response from Our Katahdin submitted
Thank you Billie Jo! We were happy to find out that the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce has supported the equipment for a "Black Fly Theater" (we love the name!). They make the equipment available to all members. The primary issue has been licensing of films, but we have identified an umbrella license that will allow for the viewing of movies from a large catalog of titles. In addition, some equipment needs upgrading and backup equipment is needed. We are moving forward on this great idea. Thank you for suggesting this... and thanks to the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce for stepping forward as the local leaders!
